G'day, mates! After three flights and 20+ hours in the air, we have finally arrived in Cairns for the first leg of our 12-day Australian tour. The team gathered in Dallas on Friday, Dec. 27 and boarded a flight to Brisbane, Australia which landed on the morning of Sunday, Dec. 29 and then hopped on the final plane to Cairns. It was strange to completely skip Dec. 28th while in flight, but everyone is quickly adjusting to the date and time change. Once we arrived to The Hotel Cairns everyone had free time to walk around, grab lunch and check out the local area, which included a large swimming pool overlooking the lagoon, Aboriginal shops, a Great War memorial and several local eateries to name a few.
Stretching our legs was a must after over 34 hours of travel so the team took off on a two-mile run down the Esplanade - a scenic boardwalk that stretches for miles next to the lagoon. Our final experience of the evening was quite unique as we ate Australian fare at Dundee's restaurant, including emu, crocodile, kangaroo, bison and barramundi.
It was a relatively early night as Day 2 has plenty in store as we head to the incredible Great Barrier Reef!
A message from our ZAG Sports experience director Jeremy Meccage that we surely hope to fulfill:
"The athletes that do their best to build relationships, those that try to immerse themselves in the culture, and those that challenge themselves to try new things and adventures, are athletes that grow the most while on tour. We hope that you will "Zag" and Challenge yourself to experience all that Australia has to offer."
