For the sixth consecutive year the George Washington men's and women's swimming programs opened the New Year in Dorado Beach, Puerto Rico, for their annual winter training trip.

While most GW students were enjoying time at home or on vacation before returning to the District for the 2014 spring semester, the Colonials' swimming teams spent six days focusing on intensive training both in and out of the water. GW trained three times a day from Jan. 1-7, meeting at an off-site pool for two in-water workouts and gathering on or near the beach for dry-land sessions.

"This was a good training trip with lots of hard work put in. It is a good time in the year when the swimmers can get away and focus strictly on training without outside distractions," Head Coach Dan Rhinehart said. "This is when we make our big push to put ourselves in a good position as we move forward to the last few weeks of our season and prepare for the Atlantic 10 Championships."

With GW's last competition of 2013 taking place over a month before the training trip, the Colonials looked at the week as a chance to regroup and refocus as they head into the latter part of the season.

"Being in Puerto Rico helped immensely by keeping the team focused on swimming," said freshman Lauren Law. "It was a nice change to be in a different setting and training in a different pool. This trip has definitely helped our overall goal of being successful at A-10s because, with more difficult practices, the team was able to step up to the challenge."

Following last weekend's Rhode Island Invitational in which the women's team won and the men's side placed second, GW welcomes Georgetown for its Senior Day meet on Saturday, Jan. 18, before visiting A-10 newcomer George Mason for its regular-season finale on Feb. 1. The Colonials return to the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio, for the second year in a row for the 2014 Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships from Feb. 19-22.
