@GW_Golf Quartet to Compete for State Amateur Championships

Four members of the GW golf program competed or will compete in their respective State Amateur Championships this summer.

UPDATED 6/20: Incoming freshman Jack Porcelli became the latest GW player to qualify for a State Am with a 4-over-par 74 and tie for fifth at the New York State Men's Amateur Championship Long Island sectional qualifier at St. George's Golf and Country Club on Thursday, June 19.  Porcelli will now be part of the 156-player field at the 72-hole stroke play championship at Bellevue Country Club in Syracuse, New York from July 22-24.

Incoming freshman Vince Palazzolo qualified for the 113th New Jersey Amateur Championship at Knickerbocker Country Club from June 3-5.

Palazzolo opened with a 2-over-par 73, featuring two birdies and an eagle on the par-5 second hole, on Tuesday and was in a three-way tie for 19th when opening-round play was suspended (LIVE SCORING).  He'll look to make the 36-hole cut down to 40 players to compete in the final 36 holes of stroke play on Thursday, June 5.

Palazzolo tied for fifth at sectional qualifying at Jumping Brook Country Club with a 4-over-par 75 to gain entry into the 105-player state amateur.

UPDATED 6/6: Palazzolo made the 36-hole cut by two shots and finished tied for 27th at 18-over 302 (73-78-72-79).  He recorded the third-best round in the field during Thursday's opening 18 holes with a 1-over 72.

Rising sophomore Lucas Farmer will participate in the 93rd Maryland State Amateur from June 5-8 on Baltimore Country Club's East Course.

Farmer earned his way into the 135-player championship with a round of 4-over 76 and a tie for 22nd place at Andrews Air Force Base's East Course on May 21.  He will play in an 18-hole qualifying round on Thursday, seeking entry into a match play field of 32 which will compete throughout the weekend.

UPDATED 6/6: Farmer carded an 11-over 81 in qualifying and did not reach the match play finals.

Rising senior Jack Persons qualified for the California State Amateur at La Costa Resort in Carlsbad after recording an even-par 71 in a Northern California sectional qualifier at Granite Bay Golf Club on May 27.  Incoming freshman Zack Bailey carded a six-over 77 and tied for 35th in that same qualifier.

Persons tied for sixth to secure one of the eight qualifying spots available from the 64-player field and will now compete in the 103rd CGA Amateur from June 16-21.

UPDATED 6/18: After an opening round 3-over-par 75, Persons followed with an even-par 72 in the second round to reach Match Play in which he dropped a 3&2 decision to fourth-seed Paul Smith in the Round of 32.
