@GW_MBB Coach Lonergan Among ESPN's Most Underrated in Nation

BKC3-21-14-188.jpgOn Monday, June 2, ESPN.com published the first part of its series of the Top 50 coaches in men's college basketball.  The list was compiled via a vote of ESPN's Forecast panel - 100 ESPN writers, editors, broadcasters and researchers to rate college basketball coaches on all aspects of running a program.

While GW men's basketball Coach Mike Lonergan didn't crack the Top 50, former college hoops coach and current ESPN analyst Fran Fraschilla weighed in on the most underrated coaches in the country and those he felt were omitted from the Top 50.

"There are five Atlantic 10 coaches on this Top 50 list but no Lonergan. I get it. He is not yet a household name. But coaches know coaches and Lonergan has the utmost respect of his peers," wrote Fraschilla regarding Coach Lonergan.

Aside from helping GW to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2007 and its second-most wins in program history with 24 in 2013-14, Coach Lonergan has been one of the most consistently successful coaches in college basketball over the past two decades.  He is one of the winningest coaches in all of NCAA Division I, ranking 21st among active coaches with a .676 winning percentage (424-203) and 37th on the active victories list, and has averaged more than 20 wins per season during his 21 years as a collegiate head coach.  And he's signed to be the coach in Foggy Bottom through 2020-21.  Pretty good for underrated.

After the jump, read Fraschilla's full ESPN Insider account on the underrated Coach Lonergan.
