@GW_WBB in Europe Day 8 - Mediterranean Beach and Final Game

What a day - what a city! Marseille is simply beautiful and the view from the restaurant in our hotel where we had breakfast is breathtaking. Speaking of breakfast, our hotel's breakfast buffet has been voted the best in Europe, and it did not disappoint.

After eating our fill, we set out for the beach. Driving along the coast provided stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea. The beach itself was unlike most beaches in the U.S. - the shore was mostly rocky instead of sand - but we didn't let that or the chilly water stop us from enjoying a few hours in the sun!

While most headed back into the city after the beach, a small group ventured up the hill to check out the Basilica Notre-Dame de la Garde and get the best view of the city, which was spectacular.

After pregame meal at a buffet on the harbor, it was game time. Our fourth and final game was against Stade Marseillais Université Club, or just SMUC for short. With most of its players in their 20s and 30s, SMUC plays in France's third division and was playing its first game against a school from the States.

We went down early thanks to a couple three's by SMUC, but we scored 14 straight points over a three-minute span and took a 26-21 lead after the first quarter, and we kept up the intensity in the second, using a 14-2 run to start the period and outscoring SMUC 29-10 in the quarter for a commanding 55-31 halftime advantage.

Despite the big lead, we didn't let up in the second half, outscoring SMUC 21-11 in the third quarter for a 76=42 lead after three and kept it going in the fourth for a 23-9 period and a 99-51 win to finish a perfect 4-0 on the trip!

Five players scored in double figures, led by sophomore Caira Washington with 17 points. Senior Lauren Chase had 13, while junior Jonquel Jones scored 12 and junior DaLacy Anderson and sophomore Hannah Schaible had 10 apiece.

SMUC then hosted us for a postgame buffet. It was fun to mix and mingle with the players on the other team and learn a little bit about what basketball is like for them.

Tomorrow brings the final day of our trip as we head about three hours northeast for a few hours in Monaco before double back for an evening in Nice on the French Riviera.
