George Washington women's water polo sophomore Brennan Marczewski has been named the GW Community Service Student-Athlete of the Month for November for her continued involvement with the Grassroot Project, as well as her time spent mentoring middle school students.
Marczewski has been an active participant in the Grassroot Project, which educates at-risk students at the Seed School in Southeast D.C. about HIV and AIDS awareness through games and other activities. in addition, she tutors students at Francis Stevens Middle School.
"I feel like I"m really helping the kids that I'm around," Marczewski said. "It's great being able to mentor these kids because they're learning valuable information while having fun at the same time. I also have a lot of fun with it because I love getting to know the kids, and because it helps me become a better teacher, which I hope to be in the future."
Marczewski said in addition to helping students with their school work, she is able to spend time getting to know them, and she has become someone whom they can look up to.
"These kinds of experiences make me realize that it's important for me to be active in the community so that these kids have a role model to look up to and who can help them, even if it's in the smallest ways, to achieve their goals, such as playing a sport in college," she said.
