GW men's soccer senior Matthew Scott has been named the GW Community Service Student-Athlete of the Month for February for his continued work with Somos Familia and the DC Stoddert Soccer Camp.
Somos Familia is a outreach program for Spanish-speaking seniors in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of D.C. Scott spends time each week delivering groceries, interacting and building relationships with the seniors in the program.
"A lot of the residents don't have many visitors and need help with little things in their apartments," he said. "I get to practice my Spanish a lot, which is helpful, but I also get to enjoy the company of these people. Most students at GW are away from their family and the service has a very home feel."
Scott also donates his time to the DC Stoddert Soccer Camp along with his teammates.
"DC Stoddert is a fun group of younger children who are passionate about soccer and we just go and encourage them to work hard and pursue their passion," he said. "I feel it is extremely important to give back to soccer; the sport has helped me make countless friends, travel to amazing places and end up at GW receiving a world-class education."
