Position: Lead Assistant CoachExperience: 8th Season at GW Alma Mater: Bowie State '79 Coaching Highlight: Darrell Brooks is in his eighth year at GW as one of Karl Hobbs' original hand-picked assistant coaches. At GW, Brooks has gained a respected reputation as a detail-oriented coach whose abilities to breakdown game film, devise effective strategy and prepare players to play has been instrumental in GW's recent dominance of the A-10. Prior to GW, Brooks spent the 2000-01 season as the head coach at Western Maryland College in Westminster, MD. Under Brooks, WMC ranked among the top three teams in the Centennial Conference in scoring, assist, three-pointers made and steals. Prior to his stint at WMC, Brooks spent 16 years as an assistant coach at six different schools including Loyola, George Mason (1993-97), American (1990-93), William & Mary (1988-90), Central State of Ohio (1985-88) and Bowie State (1984-85). Brooks also directed his own basketball camp, Camp Austral in Maliano, Spain, from 1991 through '95. "Coach Brooks has been with me since day one at George Washington. Darrell is the best basketball mind I have ever been associated with in terms of scouting and game preparation. He has a great feel for the game and teaching the game to our players. Coach Brooks is a valuable asset to our program," says Hobbs about his lead assistant. The 52-year-old Brooklyn native is a 1979 graduate of Bowie State University where he played point guard for the Bulldogs from 1975-79. Known for his strength as a teacher of the game, Brooks works primarily with the guards. His recruiting, coordination of opponent scouting and film work has proven invaluable to the success of the GW program. "Coach Brooks was a main reason for the team having the success it had over the past four years, former GW forward and Washington Wizard Mike Hall said."Coach Hobbs got a lot of credit and he deserves it, but Coach Brooks was responsible for making sure the guys knew their assignments, kept the guys motivated and made sure we achieved our potential throughout our careers. He can relate to the players very well and he taught me a lot about becoming a better basketball player and becoming a better person as well and I thank him for that." "Coach Brooks helped me develop my jump shot," former GW standout and former Los Angeles Laker, Danilo (J.R.) Pinnock said. "He always found time to get in the gym with me to get in some extra work. He was like a second father to me. Whenever I had a problem, I talked to Coach Brooks about it and he helped get me through it." |
