NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- GW basketball alumni Chris Monroe ('03) and Sarah-Jo Lawrence ('08) will be honored as Atlantic 10 Legends at the conference's respective Men's and Women's Basketball Championships this March, the league announced on Wednesday.

Monroe and Lawrence are among a 2016 class that includes 28 former men's and women's basketball student-athletes and coaches who made an immeasurable impact on each A-10 institution and its basketball program. This year marks the fourth class of Atlantic 10 Legends.

"It is an honor for the Atlantic 10 to recognize the accomplishments of the 2016 Legends class," said A-10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade. "Their significant contributions to their institution(s), teams and to college basketball have made a lasting impression. A well-deserved `congratulations' is in order for this outstanding group of individuals."

Monroe arrived at GW in 1999, and by the time he finished his career as a Colonial in 2003, the 6-foot-3 "power guard" (as labeled by head coach Tom Penders) had become the greatest scorer ever at GW and one of the top players in Atlantic 10 history. In 118 career games, Monroe reached double figures in scoring 107 times, including 60 games with 20-or-more points, en route to setting a GW program record with 2,249 career points. Monroe's career point total is the third-most of any player in A-10 history, and he ranks 11th all-time in rebounding at GW with 712 career boards, which makes him one of just four players to be inside the program's top 11 in both scoring and rebounding. He was named to the A-10 All-Rookie Team as a freshman in 2000 and followed with team MVP and A-10 All-Conference honors each of the following three seasons, including a First-Team selection in 2003. Monroe enjoyed a successful professional playing career spanning the Ukraine, Austria, Hungary, France, Greece, Italy, Iran and most recently Russia with a SuperLeague championship in 2013. He was enshrined in the GW Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012 and now works as the Director of Marketing within the GW athletics department.

A three-time A-10 All-Conference selection and the 2010 Atlantic 10 Sixth Player of the Year, Lawrence ranks among GW's all-time top-20 leaders in scoring (1,373 points) and assists (311) and shares the program record for career games played (130). The 2008 Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year and WBCA Scholarship recipient, as well as a finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, Lawrence excelled in the classroom, earning CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America Third Team honors as a senior after being named an All-District First Team selection the previous year. She was a member of four A-10 regular-season championship squads and four NCAA Tournament teams, leading GW to back-to-back Sweet 16s in 2007 and 2008. Lawrence hit arguably the most famous shot in GW women's basketball history, as her putback with 5.7 seconds left lifted the sixth-seeded Colonials to a 55-53 upset of third-seeded California to advance to the Sweet 16 for the second straight season in 2008. In her four years in Foggy Bottom, GW posted a 101-29 (.777) overall record and matched what was then a school record with 28 wins in 2006-07.
