GW Athletics Engages in Third Annual Buff & Blue Fund Challenge
Alumni of 27 Varsity Athletics Programs Join Supporters to Compete in Giving Challenge to Benefit GW Student-Athletes
The Third Annual Buff & Blue Fund Challenge is currently underway with alumni, family and friends of GW Athletics competing to provide necessary funding to support GW Athletics’ quest to build champions in competition, in the classroom, and in the community.
The Buff & Blue Fund Challenge has taken on a new component this year and is now two challenges in one: a student-athlete alumni team challenge and a fans and families challenge.
The Team Challenge calls for alumni of each GW varsity athletics team to give back monetarily to their program. The team with the highest alumni participation rate when the Challenge ends on Homecoming Weekend, February 10-12, will be named the 2017 Buff & Blue Fund Challenge Champions and take the top prize of $8,000 from the GW Athletics Advisory Council. Second and third place will earn $6,000 and $4,000, respectively, while the Most Improved team from last year will receive $2,000 for their program.
The team challenge is made possible thanks to the generosity of Michelle Rubin, ESIA BA ’91, chair of the Council. “I get more out of it than I give to it,” said Rubin. “That’s what they say about philanthropy: The more you give, the more you get. I do what I can. I’d love to do more, all the time.”
The Fans and Families Challenge stipulates that for every 100 donors to the Buff & Blue Fund Challenge, the GW Athletics Advisory Council will give $10,000 to the Buff & Blue Fund. The money raised will provide unrestricted support for facility upgrades and enhance GW’s commitment to providing the best resources and collegiate experience to its students.
“I’m grateful to all of our fans for supporting champions in competition, in the classroom, in the community,” said Patrick Nero, Director of Athletics and Recreation. “Your philanthropic support helps us to provide the best resources, opportunities to achieve excellence, and highest quality experiences for our student-athletes.”
With more than 300 donors, the inaugural Buff & Blue Fund Challenge raised more than $80,000. Last year’s Team Challenge saw the number of donors and dollars double (more than 600 and $155,000, respectively), with GW Gymnastics claiming the top prize of $10,000.
All gifts through Homecoming on February 11 count toward the Buff & Blue Fund Challenge.
