Andrea Bolognesi earned Atlantic 10 Most Outstanding Performer at the 2016 A-10 Swimming and Diving Championships after setting three conference and GW records while helping set four additional program records in relay events.
In his first appearance as a Colonial, the Cuvelgio, Italy, native set school and conference records in the 200-yard individual medley (1:46.54), 100-yard butterfly (47.18) and 100-yard breaststroke (52.44) to win gold in each event. All of Bolognesi's individual times met NCAA 'B' cut standards, putting him in the running for an invitation to the NCAA Championships. Bolognesi served as the first men's swimmer to set three A-10 records at a single Championships event since recent inductee to the GW Athletic Hall of Fame David Zenk ('09) accomplished the feat in 2009.
Bolognesi also served as a key member of GW's record-setting 200-yard medley relay team with a time of 1:29.81 to place third on the first of four days of competition. The junior went on to help GW snap a 17-year-old program record in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:21.31) and set the top GW time in the 400-yard medley relay (3:16.36) to tie for second place before closing the meet with a new school record of 3:00.60 in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
