GW Student-Athletes Achieve Excellence in Academics
27 Achieve 4.0 GPA; Dean's List and A-10 Honor Roll Student-Athletes Honored
During halftime of the men's basketball game on February 23rd, 353 GW student-athletes were honored as members of the Athletic Academic Dean's List. Earlier in the day, 123 student-athletes who compete in A-10 sponsored sports were named to the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll. A-10 Honor Roll recipients had to achieve a 3.5 GPA or better during the recently completed fall semester, while in order to be recognized on the GW Athletics' Academic Dean's List, student-athletes had to achieve a 3.0 grade point average or higher in either the spring 2016 or fall 2016 semesters.
In the spring of 2016, 76 percent of GW student-athletes hit the mark, while 68 percent of student-athletes were honored for the most recent fall semester. GW student-athlete's 3.16 cume GPA in the fall marked the fourth consecutive semester in which the department's GPA was greater than 3.15.
Among the student-athletes honored, 27 achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA in either the spring or fall semester of 2016, including Patrick Steeves (men's basketball), Lexi Martins (women's basketball), Sawyer Bilton, Carter Day and Chris Shaffer (men's cross country and track), Kaitlin Cowles and Jillian Winstanley (gymnastics), Ellee Watson, Jonathan Ghaul, Jess Hagler and Devin Hisarli (men's rowing), Taylor Brimberg and Colin Kennedy (sailing), Alastair Berry (men's soccer), Ellie De Carlo and Anna Tapen (women's soccer), Megan Linn (softball), Gustav Hokfelt and Nicolas Reeves (men's swimming and diving), Alli Lapps and Miranda Simon (women's swimming and diving), Julius Tverijonas (men's tennis), Marie-Louise Decamps (women's tennis), Maddie Brown (volleyball) and Quentin Montgomery, Connor Rosenberg and Matt Taylor (men's water polo).
Prior to the Dean's List recognitions, the student-athletes' choice for the Professor of the Year was recognized. Each year, student-athletes are asked to submit nominations for their most valued professor, who makes the greatest contribution to the academic success of GW's student-athletes. Once nominations are submitted, GW student-athletes then vote upon five finalists and the student-athletes' choice for Professor of the Year.
Dr. Marie Matta was named as the student-athletes' choice. Matta is an expert in operations management and supply chain management in the decision sciences department of the business school.
"Dr. Matta is committed to making the classroom a community of learners," said Jillian Winstanley, a junior on the gymnastics team. "She's not just a lecturer. She gets us engaged and involved in her class, and she's invested in our successes not only as students but also as student-athletes."
Other finalists included Professor Richard Tollo (Geological Sciences), Professor Michael Moses (Mathematics), Professor Nils Olsen (Organizational Sciences) and Professor Nicole Fettig (Psychology).
