Softball and Lacrosse Seniors Share Honors After Posting Career Weeks

Heidi Penna led GW to a 3-1 week against A-10 opponents La Salle and Dayton, as she went 2-0 and allowed just one run in 14.2 innings of work for a 0.48 ERA. She allowed just 10 hits and walked four while striking out 17, holding batters to a .185 average, and she tossed two complete games, including her first career shutout. The senior from Miami, Fla., matched her career high with nine strikeouts and allowed just one run on six hits and a walk in GW's 4-1 win over La Salle on Wednesday, then returned to the mound to toss a three-hit shutout while striking out six in a 4-0 victory over Dayton on Sunday. Penna, who was named A-10 Pitcher of the Week, boasts a 1.02 ERA over her last six appearances spanning 27.1 innings.

Sarah Phillips led GW to a 1-1 weekend of action and helped the Colonials clinch a berth to the A-10 Championship for the first time since 2009. With the win on Sunday over SBU, GW earned double-digit wins since the 2007 season. On Friday, despite falling to Duquesne, 15-10, Phillips tallied a game-high six points on the strength of four goals and two assists. Already the all-time career assists leader, Phillips improved to 212 points in her career on Friday, becoming GW's all-time career points leader. On Sunday, Phillips and classmate Megan Seidman combined for 14 points in a 17-11 win over St. Bonaventure to secure the A-10 bid. Phillips totaled a season-high seven points on four goals and three assists, and she tied GW's all-time record for most points in a single season with 79. The senior was named A-10 Player of the Week for her efforts.
