At a university whose namesake was the first President of the United States, this week the words of the 30th U.S. President rang true.

"No person was ever honored for what he received. Honor has been the reward for what he gave." -- Calvin Coolidge

George Washington student-athletes and the Buff & Blue Fund held a "Thankathon" this week - fittingly on the week of the legendary marathon in the state Coolidge once governed - to honor those who have made financial gifts over the last year to support GW Athletics.

"The Thankathon is an important component of our development efforts and it's great to see our student-athletes embrace this initiative," said Steven Farmer, Assistant Athletics Director, Development. "It offers a unique opportunity for our student-athletes to reach out and thank those donors who contribute each year to the Buff & Blue Fund, while also educating them on the importance of private support and the impact it has on their experience at George Washington."

Student-athletes volunteered their time to call Buff & Blue Fund donors nationwide to thank them for their financial support of GW Athletics. Additionally, many donors will receive hand-written thank you notes in the coming days.

"In every game and in every practice we compete knowing that there are thousands of people who make it possible to be a student-athlete at GW," said men's basketball's John Kopriva. "It was special to call some of our donors just to say thanks and to honor them for their support."

Throughout the week, student-athletes delivered a simple but sincere message: "Thank You." Regardless of gift amount or if the call was received, George Washington student-athletes and the Buff & Blue Fund want all donors to know that they make an invaluable difference in the lives and quality of the student-athlete experience at GW. Close to 1,000 donors were attempted to be reached over the three-night span - all in thanks for their annual contributions and support.

Make a gift to the Buff & Blue Fund, and the next time the phone rings, it might very well be a GW student-athlete calling to say "thank you" - two words that mean so much.
