Eight GW Athletics Teams Recognized By NCAA With APR Public Recognition Award

May 3, 2017

The NCAA announced Division I Academic Progress Rates (APR) Public Recognition Awards today with teams across the country that finished with an APR in the top 10 percent in their sport garnering accolades.

GW's women’s cross country, golf, gymnastics, women’s swimming & diving, men's tennis, men’s and women’s track and women's water polo teams were honored.

"This recognition achieved by our teams speaks to our department-wide initiative to be champions in the classroom,” said Director of Athletics and Recreation Patrick Nero. "It is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of our educational support staff and coaches who prioritize academic excellence in our student-athletes.”

This continues a trend in which GW Athletics has seen at least six teams earn APR Public Recognition Awards in each of the last six years.

The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I athletics teams across the country. It provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.

Today's announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.

All Division I programs’ APR scores will be released publicly on May 10.

The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16 academic years.
