GW's Egleston, Lund, Earn Top Senior Athlete Awards For 1999-2000

WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 8, 2000) - Mark Lund (Klawock, AK/Klawock) of men's basketball and Marlo Egleston (Elkland, PA/Elkland) of women's basketball were named the 2000 recipients of the J. Dallas Shirley Outstanding Senior Male Athlete Award and the Lynn George Outstanding Senior Woman Athlete Award, respectively, at George Washington University's annual Senior Honors Luncheon Monday.

Lund, a 6-2 guard on the men's basketball team, was a Rhodes Scholar candidate. He was the 1999 recipient of the team's Academic Achievement Award and the 2000 recipient of the team's Desire Award. Lund started out as a team manager at GW before being added to the roster as a sophomore walk-on. He was elected team co-captain as a senior. He first came to DC on a summer high school internship in human genetics research, and just recently has been accepted to GW's medical school.

Egleston, a 5-7 point guard, had 401 career assists, ranking third in the GW career record book. She also hit 124 three-pointers during her career, ranking fourth in the GW career record book. In the classroom, Egleston has posted a 3.52 grade-point average, and is in the GW honors program. She is also a four-time member of the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll and the GW Athletic Department Honor Roll. Like Lund, Egleston also was a Rhodes Scholar candidate and was member of the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll.

Crew's Jeremy Dutra (Vacaville, CA) and Laurie Spinella (Port Washington, NY) won the Senior Athlete Academic Awards for top grade-point average among all GW student-athletes.

Also honored were 21 Most Valuable Players, representing each sport and the Spirit Program.
