Ed McKee Moves From GW Athletics Dept. to GW Development and Alumni Relations Division

June 6, 2008

WASHINGTON, DC -- Ed McKee has been named Director of Athletic Development at the University's Division of Development and Alumni Relations at The George Washington University, Director of Athletics Jack Kvancz has announced. McKee began his new position on May 19.

For the past 22 years, Ed McKee has held a variety of responsibilities within the George Washington University Department of Athletics. McKee joined the GW Athletics staff in the summer of 1986 as the department's Director of Sports Marketing. Through the years, his duties and title evolved to an all-encompassing `Director of Sports Media and Campus/Community Relations.'

"I am very eager and excited to contribute to the growth of the development efforts on behalf of Colonials Athletics. Our varsity teams and their coaches are in need of additional financial support and my main emphasis will be to work hand-in-hand with them to achieve these goals," McKee said. "It has been my pleasure and good fortune to become acquainted with literally hundreds and hundreds of men's and women's student-athletes through the years. Now these graduates are out in the world as successful GW athletic alumni.

"Through the years, I have remained in communication with many of them by mail, email, phone and athletic newsletters (Colonials Insider). Many have returned to campus for various alumni games, gatherings and reunions. Part of my new duties will include going to visit them and sharing the latest needs of today's GW Athletics. In addition, the University has embarked on a capital fund-raising campaign to renovate the 33-year-old Charles E. Smith Center and I will assist our athletic development staff in that important endeavor," McKee added.

"I want to congratulate Ed on his new position," Kvancz said. "He will be sorely missed by all of us in the Athletic Department, but fortunately he will be only a few blocks away and I know that he will continue to be a part of GW's athletics family."

"Since my arrival at GW in 1988, Ed McKee has always represented to me the ultimate in GW athletics knowledge", added Dr. Robert A. Chernak, Senior Vice President for Student and Academic Support Service. "Ask him any fact about a former student-athlete and he'll tell you the names of their spouse and their children, what job they are doing now, and where they live. Ed has a remarkable knack for keeping in touch with our athletic alumni and his new assignment within the University perfectly matches his skill set. I wish him well and I am very happy he is continuing his affiliation with GW."

"I couldn't be more excited about Ed joining the Athletic Development Team," said Dan Rocha, Senior Director of Athletic Development. "Throughout my time here, one consistent theme that I have found in my discussions with Athletic Alumni is that Ed McKee has both the respect and affection of a number of former athletes. Ed really is one of the good guys, and having him on board is going to enhance the experience of all of our varsity athletes."

In addition to being a department's liaison with athletic alumni, he also has dealt regularly with the GW Athletic Hall of Fame, the annual Senior Honors Luncheon, games management responsibilities for both men's and women's basketball, group ticket sales for both teams, University Alumni Records, University Archives, University Relations, the Interdepartmental Communications Committee and Colonial Inauguration.
