George Washington Forms GW Athletics National Advisory Council
36-Member Delegation to Provide Volunteer and Philanthropic Leadership to Department of Athletics and Recreation
Aug. 13, 2012
WASHINGTON - The George Washington Department of Athletics and Recreation announced the formation of the GW Athletics National Advisory Council (GWANAC), which will provide volunteer and philanthropic leadership to the department by engaging key stakeholders and constituents of GW Athletics.
Co-chaired by alumnus, trustee and President of the New York Yankees Randy Levine and alumna Michelle Rubin, the council will serve to offer fundraising and outreach to the broader GW Athletics community while sharing insight and guidance with GW Athletics and Recreation senior leadership and the office of Athletics Development.
"It's my distinct privilege and honor to co-chair this group of 36 individuals who all share a common feeling and bond about George Washington's athletics and recreation initiatives," said Levine. "As we identified in the release of our strategic plan earlier this year, keeping our campus community invested in athletics is vital to the strength of the Department of Athletics and Recreation at GW, and I'm excited to be able to serve as an ambassador for the department in this new role."
"The Department of Athletics and Recreation is already making significant achievements in athletics, academics and in the community, so this council will only serve to strengthen GW's position amongst the leaders in collegiate athletics," identified Rubin. "I'm joined on this council by like-minded individuals in the sense that we all have one common goal - and that is, like our fight song suggests, to Raise High the Buff and Blue."
The Council is comprised of a cross-section of GW Athletics and Recreation stakeholders, with an emphasis on diversity across age, gender, ethnicity, geographic region, profession/industry and sport (with regard to former student-athletes). Members include: Aquil Abdullah, Debbie Briggs, Jennifer Calvery, Frank Cerullo, Lori Chaitman, Gil Cisneros, Annemargaret Connolly, Lisa De Bow, Jeremy Rohen, Jimmie Dresnick, Lauren Edwards, trustee Allan From, Michael Gettlin, Kathie Gillespie, Brandon Hammond, Lisa Harwood, Chris Hawthorne, Kristie Helfrich, Patrick Holley, Steve Kelin, trustee and co-chair Randy Levine, Rich Marmaro, Chuck Merin, Chris Monroe, Brandon Muir, Lisa Neirotti, Eddie Newland, Will Ricketson, Sean Rose, co-chair Michelle Rubin, Sandy Schwartz, Gloria Sesana, Carlos Solorzano, Ashley Starks, Victoria Tigwell, Stefan Triandafilou and David Wilson.
The leadership provided by GWANAC members will come in a variety of forms, including, but not limited to: making a personal philanthropic investment toward the priorities of the department, serving as an ambassador and advocate for GW Athletics, asking others to join in the effort, hosting special engagement events and attending important athletic and university functions.
The council will meet three times annually, with the inaugural celebration and kick-off scheduled for the eve of Alumni Weekend at George Washington - September 28-30, 2012. Chairman of the Board of Trustees Russ Ramsey will also address the GWANAC members at that time.
