George Washington Athletics Joins The White House's 'It's On Us' Campaign
National Movement Challenges Men on Campuses to Stop Sexual Assault
In conjunction with an announcement at the White House on Friday morning announcing the beginning of a national campaign to address and stop sexual assaults on campuses nationwide, the George Washington University joined the movement with the creation of an "It's On Us" public service announcement.
Six male student-athletes along with Director of Athletics and Recreation Patrick Nero and Men's Head Basketball Coach Mike Lonergan joined President of the United States Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden with the focus of engaging men in the movement.
"The statistics are shockingly clear. Sexual assault is occurring at an alarming rate on college campuses across our country," said Nero. "It is time to shine a strong light on this issue and to all work together to put an end to it. Our students and student-athletes can play a role in encouraging dialogue and action on this issue. We see this as an opportunity for them to take the lead on an issue so critical in our society."
"It's On Us" challenges everyone on campuses across the country to prevent sexual assault by accepting the responsibility to speak out against it. Coinciding with back-to-school time at universities nationwide, the announcement comes after research indicated that 1-in-5 college women will be assaulted while on campus, with most victims knowing their attackers and only 12 percent reporting the crime.
