Colonials of the Week - GW Sailing Team

The Colonial Navy
Oct. 26, 2015 The Colonial of the Week honor for Oct. 26 goes to the entire Sailing team for capturing the program’s first conference championship over the weekend. Racing against a talent-laden field, GW’s seventh-ranked women’s team won the MAISA Women’s Fall Dinghy Championship. GW finished first in both Division A and B, building a big lead in Saturday’s races before fending off a late push by Georgetown on Sunday. Miranda Bakos and Belle Strachan raced in Division A while Hannah McNomee and Madison Oleseon raced in Division B.

"Our team won based on excellent speed and good fundamentals, nothing fancy,” said head coach John Pearce. “It's a function of having a large team pushing each other and learning from each other at practice, and that's why we came out on top. In sailing, the only way to get faster is to sail against other fast boats, and we have that every day."

Along with the effort put forth by Bakos, Strachan, McNomee and Oleson, the Colonials were fortunate to have a strong group of alternates in Maria Sinagra, India Johnstone, Gabriella Malek and Kia Olsson. That kind of depth and competition in practice has helped GW reach new heights.

"While most teams had one or two alternates on shore, we had four great sailors on-call, ready for any wind condition and making sure we were prepared for every race. That kind of depth makes you hard to beat, and the additional team spirit adds a lot as well."
