Sport: GW Women’s Soccer
The 2014 GW Women’s soccer team posted its best season since 1997, which was highlighted by making a trip to the A-10 Championship semifinals following a 1-0 win over Rhode Island in the quarterfinal match. The Colonials took a 1-0 lead over top-seeded La Salle into halftime, but the two-time defending champions netted the equalizer in the second frame then tallied the golden goal in double overtime to edge the Buff and Blue.
GW wrapped the season with an overall record of 12-6-1 – marking their first 12-win campaign in 17 years – after recording their first postseason win since 1997. The Colonials also recorded nine shutouts throughout the year for the most clean sheets in 24 seasons. Five players were named to A-10 All-Conference Teams for the most postseason awards since 2002. Sophomore attacker MacKenzie Cowley, junior midfielder Kristi Abbate and senior defender Alex Brothers were named to the Second Team, and freshman forward Brittany Cooper and redshirt freshman goalkeeper Miranda Horn earned a spot on the All-Rookie Team.
