WASHINGTON - Dr. Scarlett K. Schmidt has been named Senior Executive Director of Athletics Development/Associate Athletic Director at The George Washington University.  Dr. Schmidt comes to the nation's capital having most recently served as Director of Athletic Development for the University of Delaware Athletic Fund.

"The athletic department and the University at large are extremely fortunate to be able to welcome Scarlett to our team," said George Washington University Director of Athletics and Recreation Patrick Nero.  "We are committed to ensuring that athletics at GW serves as a source of overwhelming pride for our students, alumni and fans.  Through the expertise, relationships and top-notch experience that Scarlett brings to the table, we strengthen our ability to fund and support all of our teams and programs at levels commensurate with the upper echelon of our conference and the NCAA."

Having directed the UDAF since 2007, Dr. Schmidt oversaw a 300% increase in dollars raised for the fund during her tenure, and established record growth of new donors to the University of Delaware Athletic Fund.  Schmidt established a culture of philanthropy for UDAF by building strong and mutually beneficial relationships across the University, donor, athletic alumni and season ticket holder communities, and through the creation of various clubs and point programs to encourage giving and provide donors with unique and invaluable benefits. Through a newsletter, brochures, frequent receptions and the successful Student-Athlete Thank-A-Thon program, Dr. Schmidt elevated the UDAF to unprecedented heights, and increased the visibility and awareness of UDAF at University of Delaware sporting events and in University communications.

"I'm honored to serve George Washington University," said Schmidt.  "I appreciate the opportunity that Patrick Nero and Mike Morsberger have given me as Senior Executive Director of Athletics Development, and I look forward to being part of the GW team to assist with meeting the goals, priorities and mission of GW Athletics."

At GW Dr. Schmidt will work closely with Nero and Mike Morsberger, Vice President of Development and Alumni Relations, to set strategic direction for the Athletic Development Program.  Schmidt's expertise in creating philanthropic and alumni strategies for the athletic program will be paramount to the long-term success and financial health of George Washington University's 22 intercollegiate sports, as well as dozens of club sports, and the Lerner Health and Wellness Center's initiatives to promote active and healthy lifestyles for all GW students.

"Scarlett has a well-earned reputation as one of the most talented, devoted and driven people in Development across the collegiate landscape," said Morsberger.  "Her track record is proven, and we are positively thrilled to be able to add someone of her caliber and character to our team in Foggy Bottom."

Prior to her stint in Delaware, Dr. Schmidt was the Director of Annual Giving for the Buckeye Club in The Ohio State University's Department of Athletics from 1996-1999, and Athletic Development Manager for the Virginia Tech Athletic Fund from 1993-1996.  A National Association Athletic Development Director (NAADD) Executive Committee member, Schmidt earned a Bachelor of Science (Marketing Education), Master of Science (Sports Management Administration) and Ph.D of Education (Education Administration/Higher Education) from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
