1962 ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE
Richard Castell ('32) played basketball for the Colonials from 1928-32. The Hatchet commented, "Castell last year formed one of the main cogs of Central High School's championship team and should prove a big help to Coach Thompson." In February of 1929, he scored eight of 19 points made by the Colonials against Central High School, a game which GW won 19-18. The following year he played center and earned a letter in basketball, when he was "a star of the game, making six points against Shenandoah College," read the Hatchet, for a GW victory of 28-23. In 1930, Castell was captain of the basketball team, earned a letter that spring and was picked for the inter-fraternity team for his outstanding playing. In the spring of 1930, he was appointed business manager for the Hatchet as he continued to excel on the court.
Later Castell earned a medical degree at GW (1935) and was a longtime University physician.
Dr. Castell, who died in 1980, was married to the former Esther Daughtery.
