Edsel Gustafson played both football and basketball for the Colonials. In 1943, he led the GW men's basketball team to win the Southern Conference Tournament championship. After a stint in the Navy he returned to GW and in 1947, he played on the Chicago Tribune's All-Star college football squad. He received the Tuffy Leeman Cup as GW Football's outstanding senior player.
Gustafson served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-'46, before returning to finish his degree. In 1947, after graduation, he played two years pro football with the Brooklyn Dodgers in the All-American Conference. Later, he became a sales manager for Central Soya Company, and then president of Via Plus Corporation starting in 1975.
Gustafson played high school basketball at Moline High School in Illinois where he was on the First Illinois All-Tournament team as well as the All-State team; in high school football he was named to the All-State football team and served as captain. He and his wife Bette have two sons, Thomas and James.
