1976 ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE

Ray Hanken earned letters in varsity football three times (1934-'36) and served as team captain in his senior year. He was honored as an outstanding football player on the cover of the Homecoming issue of "Athletic Review" in 1936. Hanken was also an All-Metropolitan and All Eastern player in both 1935 and '36, when he was honored as Most Valuable Player in football.

Before graduation, in 1937, Hanken signed with the NFL's New York Giants as an offensive and defensive end, where he played until 1939. Returning to GW he served as varsity and junior varsity football coach. He spent four years with the Navy (1943-'46) and returned to GW in 1946, where he served as professor and chair of the physical education service program, as well as assistant football coach. Hanken was defensive line coach when the Colonials won the Sun Bowl 13-0 in 1957. Later, he received a 25-year award as player and coach at GW.

Hanken was married to Sally, and they had two daughters, Mary Ann and Betsy Jane.
