Alfred Richmond ('21) was a guard for GW's football team.

Richmond received a high school certificate from Massanutten Military Academy of Woodstock, VA, before attending GW for a bachelor's degree in engineering. While a student at GW, he worked at the United States Naval Observatory. In 1922, he was appointed as a cadet at the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT. Graduating in 1924, he advanced through the Coast Guard ranks to become Vice Admiral and Commandant in 1954 and Admiral in 1960. While serving the Coast Guard, Richmond had returned to GW to earn a law degree in 1938; he was among the first Coast Guard officers sent to GW Law School.

Richmond was married to Gretchen Campbell and they had two sons, John and Alfred.
