What is AMP?

The Athlete Mentor Program (AMP) pairs incoming freshmen student-athletes (known as "Rookies") with a returning student-athlete (known as "Veterans") on a different sports team. Veterans serve as a valuable resource for their rookies as they experience their first semester away from home at GW. They are there to answer questions, pass along advice about life as a GW student-athlete, help with common freshmen challenges, and be another friendly face on campus.

What do you do in AMP?

AMP Veterans begin correspondence with their rookies during the summer and play a proactive role in their preparation for college. Throughout the Fall Semester, AMP rookies and veterans participate in several social, informational, and community driven events. These activities allow them to meet new people, learn from each other, and support the GW athletic community.

AMP co-captain and men's cross country senior, Dan Kane.

Here's what a few AMP freshmen had to say about their experience:

"For our small group event a few of us went and got Jumbo Slice, one of DC's biggest food attractions, and my rookie got to hang out with student-athletes from a variety of different sports. I believe that is how we are going to build a better athletic community - with programs like AMP."

- Eric Anderson, Men's Rowing

"The Athlete Mentor Program was the perfect way for me as an incoming freshman to surround myself with other student-athletes with similar ideals and it helped provide a smooth transition to GW."

- Alex Dadds, Men's Cross Country

"AMP was a great experience my freshmen year. It enabled me to meet athletes from other teams, but at the same time I was educated by AMP veterans on how to be successful on and off the field."

- Kara Clauss, Softball

"AMP is an example of how tight-knit the athletic community at GW is. I love being able to share my past experiences, successes, and failures with freshmen athletes to make their four years the best they can be."

- Lauren Whyte, Volleyball

AMP co-captain and women's lacrosse senior, Emily Perling.
