The Office of Alumni RelationsAthletic Alumni ProgramsEd McKee The GW Athletic Alumni Program is one of the Office of Alumni's newest and most exciting initiatives. Until January 2011, there was no specific program for the University's athletic alumni. Now, GW's rich and extensive athletic history is now represented in the Alumni House, with benefits that engage current student athletes, and build the foundation for a lifelong connection. The Office of Alumni Relations is focused on offering programs and services which encourage and engage current student-athletes - from the moment a prospective athlete is recruited by GW, until they join the ranks of University alumni. Many teammates and classmates become friends and, perhaps, business associates for a lifetime. Athletic Alumni Programs, a key campus affinity group, will help to cement these relationships with regular alumni events. GW now sponsors 22 varsity intercollegiate teams, 10 men's sports and 12 women's sports. The total number of student-athletes representing the University this year is more than 425. Those numbers are much larger than in the `50s and `60s when six or seven men's sports, including football, represented the University--prior to the advent of Title IX and the creation of intercollegiate sports for women here in 1975. Directing GW's Athletic Alumni Program is Ed McKee, who has been at the University for 25 years, including 22 as a staffer in the Department of Athletics. In just the last five months, alumni events have been held for five teams: baseball (January), men's basketball (February), gymnastics (March) and men's and women's rowing (April) attracting more than 200 former Colonials athletes and coaches. |
