Taking an Alternative Break from GW Athletics - April 18, 2012
University-wide service events like Freshman Day of Service and a plethora of Alternative Breaks make it both easy and fun for the average GW student to give back to the community. Student-athletes, however, often struggle to find time to dedicate themselves to service between their academic schedules and athletic commitments. Despite these obstacles, several GW student-athletes chose to use some of their precious down time this year to help those in need.

GW Cross Country to Pass 330 Hours of Community Service - March 30, 2012
The George Washington cross country team heard the initiative loud and clear. Director of Athletics and Recreation Patrick Nero challenged the more than 400 student-athletes at GW to show appreciation for the surrounding communities and increase the amount of community service hours and projects as part of the recently released Strategic Plan for George Washington Athletics and Recreation. The men's and women's cross country teams elected to go above and beyond, passing more than 330 hours of community service for the 2011-12 school year and combining to raise money and awareness for nearly a dozen different causes in the Washington Metro area.

Men's Soccer Player Seeking to Make a Difference at GW's CGI U - March 28, 2012
Thomas Nicholas came to George Washington University in the fall of 2011 with an ambition to make a difference in the world. The sophomore men's soccer student-athlete from Metuchen, N.J., will have the opportunity to make that impact when he presents his Commitment to Action entitled "Anatomy of a Goal, Enriching Lives Through Soccer" at the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) hosted on GW's campus, March 30-April 1.

George Washington Student-Athletes Join GW Peers in MLK Day of Service - Jan. 23, 2012
On Saturday, January 21st more than 400 GW community members participated in a day of service, lending a hand at sites that included five D.C. schools and 13 parks and recreation centers, as well as on projects to benefit the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), which supports families of deceased members of the military. Included in the group of volunteers were more than 100 GW student-athletes.

GW Women's Water Polo Team Raises Funds for AIDS Walk Washington - Oct. 25, 2011
Already past its initial goal of raising $1,000, the George Washington women's water polo team continued to raise funds for the 25th annual AIDS Walk Washington that took place on Saturday, Oct. 29.

GW Student-Athletes Take Part in GW + Phones = Hope Rally - Oct. 18, 2011
Student-athletes Jabari Edwards, Emily Perling, Katie Crosby, Hillary DeCarl and Luke Mirabella were among a number of GW students donating time and phones for the GW + Phones = Hope Kickoff Rally at the university's Marvin Center Tuesday, Oct. 18.

GW Men's Tennis Volunteers at Stomp Out Sickle Cell Walk - Sept. 23, 2011
On Saturday, Sept. 17, the George Washington men's tennis team volunteered at the fifth annual Stomp Out Sickle Cell 5K Run/Walk that took place around the district.

A Day to Remember - Sept. 12, 2011
Director of Athletics and Recreation Patrick Nero and GW freshman student-athletes joined more than 2,300 fellow Colonials for 2011 Freshman Day of Service on Sunday to remember the 10th anniversary of September 11th and build community throughout the district.

GW Student-Athletes Raise Awareness for HIV/AIDS Education in Weekend Soccer Tournament - Sept. 2, 2011
George Washington University student-athletes who typically don't play soccer will be kicking around a soccer ball on Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011 for a good time and a good cause - educating elementary and middle school students about HIV and AIDS.

Colonials Men's Basketball Lends a Hand on Move-In Day - Aug. 26, 2011
On Friday, August 26, 2011, as students and parents unloaded their cars and began moving into their respective residence halls at the George Washington University, several members of the GW men's basketball team were on site to lend a helping hand.

Women's Soccer 'Adopts' Young Cancer Patient - Aug. 22, 2011
For the past two weeks, the GW women's soccer team has been hard at work preparing for the start of their season, which began Aug. 19 with a match against Georgetown University on the Mount Vernon Athletic Field. But on Aug. 17, 2011 the team took time off from its training to visit with one of its biggest--and most unique--fans.

Women's Soccer's Sullivan Helps Level the Playing Field - Aug. 5, 2011
Junior forward Kayley Sullivan and the George Washington women's soccer team began preseason training on the newly renovated turf at Mount Vernon Athletic Field Friday afternoon. Sullivan returns to Foggy Bottom after spending a portion of her summer sharing her skills and values with young women in Bolivia.

George Washington student-athletes, coaches and administrators came together Monday night, Dec. 13, 2010 at Charles E. Smith Center for a 24-team co-ed dodgeball tournament, hosted by GW's Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) to raise money for Miriam's Kitchen, a District organization that helps the homeless.
