Men's Rowing Races Virginia, GMU

March 31, 2003

WASHINGTON, DC - The GW Men's Rowing team opened their spring season March 29 with a three-way race against Virginia and George Mason on the Potomac River. Conditions were overcast and the water was relatively flat in the first 1,000 meters of the race but as the crews came through Key Bridge waves started to pick up as a result of a head wind.

"This was our first race of the season and therefore the first opportunity for me to see how fast we are in regards to our competition," saind GW varsity men's coach Matt Boyle. "I was pleased with our victories in the Freshmen and Varsity boats and it is clear we have some work to do with our Second Varsity. I was very impressed with the Freshmen Crew and the way they handled themselves in rough racing conditions. It is still very early in our season so these results only signify that we are headed in the right direction, we will race these crews several more times this season so to stay ahead of them we will have to maintain our focus and committ to working harder as a team."

Added Boyle, "We race next weekend at the Occoquan Sprints which is a slightly larger regatta, we will get a better gauge of our boat speed there."

RESULTS:
Men's Freshmen 8:

1. George Washington 6:03.6
2. Virginia "A" 6:16.3
3. Virginia "B" 6:32.4
4. George Mason 7:01.0

Men's Second Varsity 8:
1. Virginia "A" 5:53.0
2. George Washington 5:58.8
3. Virginia "B" 6:04.7

Men's Varsity 8:
1. George Washington 5:41.3
2. Virginia 5:43.6
3. George Mason 6:02.6

The GW men's rowing team next competes at the Occoquan Sprints on Sunday, April 6, in Lorton, VA.
