WASHINGTON, DC -- The U.S. Naval Academy crews took five first-place finishes and a pair of third-place finishes to capture the Gilbert H. Hood, Jr. Point Trophy at the 16th Annual George Washington Invitational Crew Classic Saturday on the Potomac River.
The Midshipmen amassed 46 team points, nine more than second-place George Washington, en route to the team point title. Tennessee (32 points) placed third in the team point standings with Georgetown in fourth place with 28 points. GW's second-place finish was it's highest since the 1994 GW Crew Classic when they placed second also behind Navy.
For the first time in the event's history, the race was rowed up-river into a strong headwind and an even stronger current. GW coach Steve Peterson said the change was necessary to compensate for the higher and faster moving river and turbulent waters caused by several days of rain. The change in direction was also important for safety reasons and in fairness to the rowers. The course also was shortened to 1,500 meters from the normal 2,000 meters when the race is rowed down-river. Tennessee's women's varsity eight won the Howard Wilkins Bowl with a time of 6:27.9 defeating the host Colonials by 19 seconds.
Navy edged Temple in the men's varsity eight race breaking the Owls' three-year hold on that race. The Midshipmen completed the 1,500-meter course in 5:33.4--nine seconds ahead of Temple. That race was not without controversy, however, as the Navy and Temple crews made oar contact early in the race. Following deliberation by the judges, Navy was awarded the Oliver T. Carr Bowl given to the fastest men's heavyweight eight shell.
