WASHINGTON, DC (Sept. 22, 2001) - The GW women's rowing team competed in the 21st Annual Head of the Potomac Regatta Saturday in its first competition of the fall schedule. The Colonials rowed well despite limited practice time on the river which had been closed to all traffic the week following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
"Fall racing is very interesting because the college crews get to race against club crews which often times contain elite oarsmen," GW head coach Steve Peterson said. "Case in point was the Potomac Boat Club Women's Eight which won the Open Eight. Three of those women raced in the US Women's Eight (including GW Alumna Linda Miller) and two of them raced in the Olympic Eight (at the 2000 Olympic games) in Sydney. So we were really racing against some of the best."
Also racing for the Buff and Blue this weekend were five eights worth of alumni, ranging from 2001 graduates, to members of the class of '65. The regatta has become a big alumni event for the Colonial crew.
"The results are pretty indicative of the amount of practice time we have had this year," Peterson said. "This race is a week earlier. The river was closed to all boat traffic for a week during the terrorist threats so we really haven't had much time to train on the water therefore the results didn't really surprise me. In fact one of the women on the team realized that this race was only the seventh time we have been able to row this year on the water."
The GW Varsity women's crew raced in the following three events:
Women's Open Eight (GW placed fourth out of 12 crews)
1. Potomac Boat Club 15:43.6
2. US Naval Academy 15:59.3
3. Georgetown 16:26.6
4. GW 16:26.7
Women's Club Eight (GW placed fifth out of 10 crews)
1. US Naval Academy 'A' 16:30.1
2. Capital Rowing Club 16:34.5
3. Passaic River Rowing Assoc. 16:42.2
4. US Naval Academy 'B' 16:49.3
5. GW 16:56.7
Women's Four (GW placed second out of 13 crews)
1. Capital Rowing Club 17:33.1
2. GW 18:00.4
Next up for the GW men's and women's rowing teams is the The Head of the Charles Regatta, Oct. 20-21, in Boston, MA.
