GW Rowing Names Betancourt Assistant Coach

July 22, 2002

WASHINGTON, DC - Helen Betancourt has been named to the George Washington University coaching staff for women's rowing, head coach Steve Peterson has announced. Betancourt replaces Samantha Byrd who resigned to pursue other interests.

A 1998 graduate of Brown University, Betancourt will be responsible for coaching the women's novice. She comes to GW after serving as an assistant coach at Episcopal Academy in Merion, PA. Prior to that, she was the assistant women's rowing coach at San Diego State University.

Betancourt was an alternate for the U.S. Rowing team in the 2000 Olympic games at Sydney, Australia, and represented the U.S. at the World Championships in Croatia, Canada, Germany and France from 1997 to 2000.

At Brown, Betancourt was a three-time All-Ivy League selection for the Bears and captained the varsity eight as a senior. She was named one of Brown's 100 Greatest Athletes of the Century in 2000.

She was a member the Brown varsity crew that placed second in the NCAA Women's Rowing championship at Atlanta in 1998. She also helped lead Brown to a third-place national finish at the '97 NCAAs in Sacramento and completed an undefeated season in 1996 as Brown won the national championship in Cincinnati.

GW Rowing is headquartered at Thompson Boat Center on the Potomac River. The GW women's rowing team competes in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
