Women's Rowing Opens Strong at Home

March 28, 2005

WASHINGTON, DC -- The GW women's rowing team opened the spring portion of the season at home on the Potomac River Saturday in a four-way race with Georgetown, Indiana and North Carolina. The racing conditions were fast due to recent rains. The current on the river was moving quickly causing the teams to use a floating start. The river was made even more treacherous by several large logs that the coxswains were forced to steer around.

In the freshmen race, the GW women's freshmen eight finished 20 seconds ahead of the competition. Indiana, coached by former GW head coach, Steve Peterson, won the varsity 8 by less than two seconds ahead of the Colonials varsity.

"The distance between the top two finishers was even closer than the times indicated, said GW Coach Helen Betancourt. "The finish line flag was dropped for first place and immediately raised to indicate the second-place boat had crossed the finish line."

Varsity 8:
Indiana 5:54.7
George Washington 5:56.6
Georgetown 6:03.4
North Carolina 6:04.3

2nd Varsity 8:
North Carolina 6:33.8
George Washington 6:38.6
Indiana 6:40.0
Georgetown no time taken

Varsity Four:
Indiana 7:32.7
George Washington 7:38.9

Novice 8:
George Washington 6:27.0
Georgetown 6:47.1
North Carolina 6:51.7
Indiana 6:59.3

Next up for the GW women will be the Playfair Cup, this Saturday, April 2, featuring crews from Navy, Boston University and Georgetown.
