WASHINGTON, DC -- The George Washington men's and women's rowing teams combined to score 51 points to place second out of 12 teams in the18th Annual George Washington Invitational Crew Classic before a crowd of thousands Saturday on the Potomac River. Virginia scored 67 points to capture the Gilbert H. Hood, Jr. Point Trophy and the U.S. Naval Academy was third with 46 points, one point ahead of Georgetown (45 points). Points were awarded based on finish in the grand final races and petite finals.
Sunny skies with temperatures in the low 60s and a moderate headwind made for near-ideal racing conditions. The Cavalier crews took four first-place finishes, three second-place finishes and a pair of thirds in amassing 67 points, 16 more than the host Colonials, en route to the team point title. GW, which has never won the team point title, matched its highest finish in the regatta. GW also placed second in the final standings in 2003 and in 1994.
The GW women's varsity eight won its race defeating Georgetown by four seconds to win the Howard Wilkins Bowl and the 1998 Trophy awarded to the women's team points leader between GW and Georgetown.
Navy won the men's varsity eight for the third straight year by outracing Virginia by more than seven seconds. The Midshipmen completed the 2,000-meter course in 5:58.8--one second slower than last year's winning time. Navy was awarded the Oliver T. Carr Bowl given to the fastest men's eight shell.
