Navy Wins Team Point Title at the 17th Annual GW Invitational Crew Classic

WASHINGTON, DC - For the third striaght year, the U.S. Naval Academy captured the Gilbert H. Hood, Jr. Point Trophy at the 17th Annual George Washington Invitational Crew Classic Saturday on the Potomac River. After a cool and cloudy morning with temperatures in the 50s gave way to a sunny afternoon with temperatures in the low 60s. Rowers had near-ideal racing conditions with a slight tailwind and a moderate tailcurrent.

The Midshipmen crews took four first-place finishes, one second-place finish and a pair of thirds in amassing 65 points, 20 more than second-place Saint Joseph's, en route to the team point title. Georgetown (36 points) placed third in the team point standings with Tennessee in fourth place with 31 points. Host George Washington came in fifth with 28 points after finishing second in this event last year.

For the second straight year, Tennessee's women's varsity eight won the Howard Wilkins Bowl with a time of 6:30.9, three seconds slower than their winning time last year. The Lady Vols defeated Southern Cal's Women of Troy by just two seconds.

Navy outraced Temple in the men's varsity eight final by more than seven seconds to win the event for the second straight year. The Midshipmen completed the 2,000-meter course in 5:57.6-24.2 seconds slower than last year's winning time. Navy was awarded the Oliver T. Carr Bowl given to the fastest men's heavyweight eight shell.
