Men's Rowing Battles Weather, Top Crews at ECAC National Invitational

May 9, 2005

WORCESTER, MA -- The GW men's rowing team competed in the 2005 ECAC National Invitational Rowing Championships Sunday on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, MA. The Invitational was scheduled to cover both Saturday and Sunday but was cut short by 30-mph winds, rain and temperatures in the 30s and 40s.

The combination of bad weather forced the cancellation of all preliminary heats on Saturday. A revised schedule was set in place for Sunday but the weather again refused to cooperate and many races had to be cancelled. The Freshmen men were able to race their heat on Sunday, finishing fourth in their heat in a time of 6:36. They would have continued on to a Petite Final race but that event was cancelled due to the weather.

The Varsity Eight, consisting of coxswain Amy Garrison (Arvada, CO), Joe DeLeo (Somers Point, NJ), Oliver Blodgett (Salem, MA), Matt Brady (Northfield, NJ), Mike Mancusi-Ungaro (Philadelphia, PA), Henry Roosevelt (Pocopson, PA), Justin Luther (St. Louis, MO), Tim Conroy (Bay Village, OH) and Alex Cashman (Pittsburgh, PA) was in a position to race three times on Sunday due to Saturday's events being cancelled.

The Varsity Eight took second in their heat at 7:30 am, behind Marist College, which moved them on to the semifinal. The weather once again flared up and racing was postponed again throughout the middle of the day. Race organizers took the drastic step of cancelling all racing except for the Men's and Women's Varsity eights, which resumed around 4 pm on Sunday. The Varsity men needed to place in the top three in their semifinal to continue on to the Grand Final. They had a very strong race and took third place, behind Michigan and Virginia, to move into the premier event of the day. Due to the revised schedule and impending darkness, the Varsity had only about 40 minutes to rest after their Semifinal to prepare for the Grand Final. The Final was a strong effort by the Colonials but they came up short, finishing in 6th place.

Last year at the same event, the GW Varsity finished 12th in a field of 18 crews. This year, the field was expanded to 24 crews and the Colonials finished 6th, quite a turnaround in one year's time.

The Colonials now focus on the IRA National Championship Regatta, to be held June 2-4, in Cherry Hill, NJ.
