Men's Varsity Rowing Places 2nd at Occoquan Chase

Oct. 17, 2005

LORTON, VA -- The GW men's men's rowing opened it's fall season Sunday at the 2005 Occoquan Chase Regatta at Sandy Run Regional Park in Lorton, VA. The weather was sunny with only a slight wind throughout the day. Temperatures were in the high 60s making it perfect for racing.

For the varsity squad, The GW varsity placed second behind a very strong Virginia team in the Open Eight event. GW was the top collegiate entry in the Open Four (2nd overall).

The GW freshmen eight defeated regional rivals Georgetown and Virginia to win the Collegiate Novice Eights race. The Colonials freshmen took second in the Collegiate Novice Fours event, behind only Georgetown.

"As a season opener, this was a terrific regatta - a little windy, but an otherwise beautiful fall day and a well-run race," GW men's coach Greg Myhr said. "Team wide, our crews rowed very aggressively, and performed quite well, given where we are in our season. Most impressively, the freshman eight won its event with five true novices in the boat - that's a great way to begin a collegiate rowing career."

The GW Varsity Eight consists of coxswain Amy Garrison, Joe Deleo, Henry Roosevelt, Jon D'Alba, Mike Mancusi, Pete Magee, Alex DelSordo, Ryan Luther and Andrew Cummings.

The victorious Colonials Freshman Eight consists of coxswain Caroline Emanuel, Cameron Rogers, Ben Lookner, Griffin Knight, Travis Schulze, Max Wahle, Tom Schubbe, Mike Rossetti and Grant LaFarge.

Next up for the Colonials will be the Head of the Charles on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 22-23, at Boston, MA.
