Oct. 24, 2005
BOSTON, MA -- The GW women's rowing team competed in the 2005 Head of the Charles Regatta Sunday on the Charles River in Boston, MA. The Colonials varsity eight finished 21st out of 46 entries in the Championship Women's Eight event. GW placed 16th among collegiate crews. The Colonials placed 34th in the same event last year.
The crews rowed against a slight headwind and some chop at the start, but overall the conditions were good following a steady rain on Saturday. Sunday, the weather was sunny with only a slight wind throughout the day. Temperatures were in the high 60s making it perfect for racing.
"Our goal was to finish in the top 25," GW head coach Rob McCracken said. "We're really pleased with the way our women rowed. We had two goals coming into the race: one, to finish in the top 25 and two, to row a really strong, competitive race from start to finish."
The U.S. National Team won the event in the time of 16:34, while the Colonials were 21st in 18:03. GW defeated several crews in the Eastern Sprints league including Radcliffe, Rutgers, Syracuse, Cornell, Penn, Navy and Georgetown. The Colonials also finshed the three-mile course faster than A-10 foes Fordham, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
The Head of the Charles is a tricky three-mile course with five bridges and several turns. "With a staggered start and crews at different speeds, it's important to navigate a precise course which Lindsay did really well," said GW assistant coach Sarah Dondero. "It requires the athletes to be really aggressive in order to get the best line going into the turns."During the race, the boat passed the Smith boat during the race.
"I thought that we raced really hard and had a lot of fun this weekend," junior Kate Austin said. "Finishing 21st [in a field this strong] is a great way to give us
momentum and confidence to carry throughout the season."
The GW Varsity Eight consists of coxswain Lindsay Doyle (Hackettstown, NJ), Diane Holcomb (Wilmington, DE), Angie Costales (Groton, MA), Hilary Goldberg (Bethesda, MD), Kate Austin (Madison, WI), Liz Gordon (Phoenix, AZ), Courtney Fawcett (Hingham, MA), Jean Williamson (Moon Township, PA) and Angela Wunderli (St. Louis, MO).
