Colonials to Compete at Head of the Charles Sunday

Oct. 21, 2005

BOSTON, MA -- Both the GW men and women rowers will be competing at the 41st Head Of The Charles® regatta Sunday in Boston, MA. It is the world's largest two-day regatta. This year there are nearly 1,600 boats rowing at the Head Of The Charles Regatta.

In total, more than 7,500 people will be rowing at HOCR this year. Competition includes boats registered from 41 states (including Alaska and Hawai'i) and 14 countries. More than 12 percent of all entries are registered from countries outside of the U.S. The race starts near Boston University's DeWolf Boathouse and finishes approximately three miles (4,820 meters) upstream.

Winners are determined by time. The boat that rows the course, clocked at the fastest time without penalties, wins their event. The quickest rowing time wins (i.e., not the first boat to cross the finish line). Each boat starts sequentially approximately 15 seconds apart.

The GW Women are entered in the Championship Women's 8 which features 46 entries, including the U.S. National Team as well as the Canadian and Dutch national teams.
