George Washington Head Sailing Coach John Pearce announced on Sept. 18, 2015, the hiring of Catherine Shanahan as the program’s first-ever full-time assistant coach.

Shanahan, a 2015 graduate of St. Mary’s College of Maryland, is a former collegiate sailing star who excelled at all sailing disciplines as a collegian, including singlehanded, match race, coed and women’s formats.

"We are thrilled to have Catherine Shanahan joining GW Sailing as Assistant Coach,” said Pearce. “Catherine has sailed at the highest level as an ICSA competitor, including competing in nine national championship regattas during her four years at St. Mary's. She is an extremely versatile sailor who is excellent both as a skipper and a crew, and she has proven leadership ability as a two-time captain of the St. Mary's team. Catherine brings invaluable knowledge and experience to our team, and she is also a wonderful person to be around."

On the water last season, Shanahan placed 1st at the Navy Fall Women's Intersectional, 3rd at the ICSA Match Race National Championships, 4th at the ICSA Singlehanded National Championships, 6th at the ICSA Coed National Championships, 7th at the ICSA Team Race National Championships, and 10th at the ICSA Women's National Championships.

Shanahan, who is also US Sailing Level One certified, was a United States Sailing Sperry Topsider Olympic Team Member for the NACRA 17 in 2013-14. In addition to her sailing accolades, Shanahan also has experience managing the St. Mary’s boathouse and she was formerly a sailing instructor at the Noroton Yacht Club in Darien, CT.
