NORFOLK, Va. & CHESTERTOWN, Md. - GW sailing began its 2014 spring season with a seventh place showing at the ODU Spring Open and a pair of victories at the Tom Noble Team Race.
GW totaled 137 points over 10 races at the ODU Spring Open to finish seventh out of 16 teams. The Colonials were as high as fourth during Sunday racing, but settled behind eventual winner Pennsylvania (48 points), two teams from St. Mary's (Md.) College and Hampton Roads locals Christopher Newport, Old Dominion and Hampton.
Sophomore Hannah McNomee and senior Erin McCormack finished in the top five in half of their 10 races, peaking at second in Race 5, for 63 points and seventh in A Division. Sophomores Benjamin Helfand and Henry Young posted a fifth in Race 2 en route to seventh in B Division with 74 points.
"Overall, I think we showed good promise," said Head Coach John Pearce of the Colonials' showing at the ODU Spring Open. "Hannah and Erin had a solid event across the board."
At the Tom Noble Team Race on the Chester River, GW posted a 2-8 record to place fifth out of six teams.
The Colonials secured one win on Saturday, besting SUNY Maritime 1-4-5, and another in Sunday's final race via a 1-2-3 sweep over Navy. GW's trio of boats were manned by freshman Colin Kennedy and senior Sarah McCormack, freshman Daniel DelBello and junior Meagan Murphy, and sophomore Maria Sinagra and junior Matthew Ricci.
"It was good to end on a positive note with the sweep of Navy and we made a lot of progress in team racing strategy," added Coach Pearce. "All in all, a productive opening weekend, a great way to kick off the semester with a lot of hard work ahead of us."
GW is scheduled for a pair of regattas next weekend, March 8-9, at the Navy Women's Intersectional in Annapolis, Md., as well as the local John Jackson Team Race hosted by Georgetown at the Washington Sailing Marina in Alexandria, Va.
