Colonial of the Week - GW Sailing's Kaitlin Denney
Senior Crew Helped Lead GW to First Bid to Atlantic Coast Women's Championship Since 2010
Oct. 7, 2013
Name: Kaitlin Denney
Hometown: Marion, Mass.
High School: Bishop Stang
Senior crew Kaitlin Denney and skipper Maria Sinagra posted a critical victory in Race 10 to help the GW sailing team overtake Fordham for seventh place at the MAISA Women's Fall Championship and earn entry into next month's Atlantic Coast Women's Championship. It marks the first time GW qualified for the Atlantic Coast Women's Championship since 2010, and first time ever as a varsity program.
GW started the final day of racing on Sunday in ninth place, 14 points and two spots out of the final qualifying position. Led by Denney, as well as strong performances from Sinagra, sophomore Hannah McNomee and senior Erin McCormack, the Colonials overtook Queen's (N.Y.) and Fordham for the final qualifying bid from the event.
"Kaitlin is our primary team leader who helped our women's squad through some tough moments this weekend and led the recovery, and her ability in the crewing position is really what enables Maria to do well," said Coach John Pearce.
