GW Sailing Heads to War Memorial
Colonials set to compete in MAISA Coed Conference Championship
WASHINGTON -- A week after competing in women's and match race conference championships, the GW Sailing team will be back it title contention at the War Memorial hosted by St. Mary's College of Maryland this weekend.
The War Memorial serves as the MAISA Coed Conference Championship for the fall and features a strong field of 18 teams, including seven which are ranked in Sailing World's national top-20. GW is ranked 16th in the coed poll and is joined by No. 1 Georgetown, No. 10 Navy, No. 12 Hobart & William Smith, No. 13 St. Mary's, No. 18 Old Dominion and No. 19 Fordham
"A lot is on the line this weekend," said head coach Billy Martin. "The top seven teams at this event will qualify for the Coed Atlantic Coast Championships. I think the team has prepared well and is ready to put in a good showing. The sailing venue is one of the trickiest you'll see on the circuit, and keeping strong mentally will be key."
GW recorded its best-ever finish in a coed conference championship at the War Memorial last year, taking third place, and return several sailors that were key in the finish. In A Division, skipper Brendan Shanahan will again pair with crew Belle Strachan, while Andreea Ranney-Pace will also mix in as crew. Kai Friesecke will once again skipper B Division, pairing with crews Briggs D'Eliscu and Miranda Bakos. Andrew Sheerin will serve as a reserve.
