Women's Squash Places Third in D Division at Howe Cup

WASHINGTON, DC - The GW Women's Squash team won two matches over the weekend, February 21-23, to finish third in the D division at the Howe Cup at Yale. The Colonials defeated Stanford, 8-1, and Rochester, 9-0. Their losses came to division finalists, Franklin and Marshall and Smith.

On Friday, senior Mary Mayo (Upper Marlboro, MD/Bishop McNamara) picked up the lone victory for the Colonials against Franklin and Marshall in a match where the Colonials lost 8-1. The Colonials turned things around on Saturday and posted an 8-1 victory over Stanford. Sophomore Emily Elliott (Radnor, PA/Radnor) and junior Alex Hahn (Darien, CT/Phillips Exeter Academy) led the way with victories and the number two and three slots.

The Colonials continued their winning ways later on Saturday in defeating Rochester 9-0. Megan Morris (Bountiful, UT/Woods Cross) picked up a win at number one by defeating Andrea Murphy, 9-4, 9-3, 9-0. Junior Sierra Curtis (Farmington, CT/Hotchkiss) and sophomore Lisa Cahan (Dover, MA/Noble and Greenough) added to the Colonials score with straigth set victories at number four and six, respectively.

GW was unable to advance any further on Sunday after losing to Smith, 8-1. Freshman Jessica Marks (Denver, CO/Denver East) tallied the lone victory for the Colonials at number five by beating Rose Komarek, 10-9, 9-2, 10-8.

The Colonials finished their inaugural season with a record of 2-5, and showed massive improvement throughout the season. They will look to use their experiences this season to build towards next season.
