Men's Squash Upends Haverford 8-1

Washington, DC - The George Washington men's squash team exceeded expectations this past week with an 8-1 dismantling of the Haverford University squad at the United States Naval Academy Invitational.
The George Washington team was given a pre-season ranking of 34th out of a total 36 teams. With the addition of four strong freshman, including Dhruv Singh (Jaipur, India/Mayo College), Mike Greenwald (Brookline, MA/St. Marks), and Greg Vernick (West Roxbury, MA/Milton Academy), the team set its sites on reaching the 25th spot. Haverford, was 26th in the pre-season rankings and GW went into the match intent on making a strong statement with a victory.
The Colonials began the tournament with a loss to Hobart who is currently ranked in the top 15 and ended the day losing a hard fought battle to number 12 Navy. The second match of the day, however, played out just as GW had hoped. The Colonials played exactly as they needed to and proved that they are a team to be reckoned with this year.
Colonials' captain Matt Navarro (Charleston, WV/Phillips Exeter Academy) said the win will only give the team more motivation to work harder for the next three weeks before break. "We will come back for the end of the year championships in Princeton with high expectations." The win over Haverford comes on the heels of an even more impressive win the prior week over Colgate.
