Washington, DC - The George Washington men's squash team split Saturday"s two matches at the United States Naval Academy resulting in a 2-1 record to start the season. The Colonials first lost to Denison with a final score of 2-7 and then upset No. 20 Stanford in a close 5-4 victory.
Junior Tyler Wolas (Boca Raton, FL/Pine Crest) remains unbeaten this year, earning two wins in Saturday's matches. Jake Greenbaum (Brookline, MA/St. Marks) was the other Colonials player to score a victory in GW's 2-7 loss to Denison.
The 5-4 win against Stanford was secured by Ben Hoefs (Franklin, MI/Detroit Country Day School) who came from behind to lead the Colonials to victory. Hoefs was down 1-7 in the fifth and final game before he reeled-off eight unanswered points to claim the unexpected victory.
In addition to Wolas and Hoefs, sophomore Dhruv Singh (Jaipur, India/Mayo College), sophomore Mike Greenwald (Brookline, MA/St. Marks) and freshman Dan Shafer (Duxbury, MA/Tabor Academy) were also victorious against Stanford.
The Colonials return to action on Sunday when they have three matches at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. GW plays California at 9:00 am, the home team Navy at noon and Utah at 2:00 pm.
