Men's Squash Wins Two Of Three To Close Out Most Successful Weekend In Two-Year History

Nov. 17, 2003

Final Stats

Annapolis, MD -- The Colonials men's squash team had one of its best weekends in the programs two-year history going 3-2 against top opponents this weekend at the United States Naval Academy. The team improves to 4-2 this season and has now recorded victories against Stanford and California, both schools are among the Nation's Top 20.

On Sunday, The Colonials opened the day with a solid 7-2 victory over favored California. GW then swept Utah 9-0 for its third win of the weekend. In the fifth and final match of the weekend, an exhausted Colonials side collapsed in a 0-9 sweep by host Navy.

With a back injury to GW's number one player Greg Vernick (West Roxbury, MA/Milton Academy) the rest of the team had to step up to secure victory. Sophomore Dhruv Singh (Jaipur, India/Mayo College) played in the number one spot while sophomore Ben Hoefs (Franklin, MI/Detroit Country Day School) moved into the number two role. The two weekend losses were to No. 13 Denison and No. 16 Navy both ranked higher than the Colonials who hope to break into the Top 20 when the new rankings come out next month.

The Colonials men have one more match before the semester break. The team's final 2003 match will be at Franklin & Marshall on Saturday at 11:00 am. The women's squash team will start their season with two matches this coming weekend. The women will compete against Navy and Dartmouth at the United States Naval Academy on Saturday, November 22.
