ANNAPOLIS, MD - The Colonials women's squash team opened their second year with a 0-9 loss to No. 5 Dartmouth. The GW men also lost on the day when they fell 1-8 to No. 12 Franklin & Marshall. Both matches were held at the United States Naval Academy.
The men's team was led by Dan Shafer (Duxbury, MA/Tabor Academy) who had a 3-1 victory playing in the eighth position. The other Colonials struggled against strong opponents from Franklin and Marshall, one of the top teams in the country. Five of GW's players did, however manage to win one game in their matches. The Colonials drop to 4-3 but remain over .500 going into the season break. Their next actioin will take place in 2004 when the team faces Hamilton and Vassar on Saturday, January 17.
The women opened their season with a tough test against Dartmouth who is ranked as the fifth-best team in the country. The Colonials dropped to 0-1 on the season after going 2-8 last year. GW did not win a game in the sweep but used the match as a learning experience against one of the top teams in the country.
The Colonials had to compete with a squad of only eight, rather than the usual nine, as they wait for additional members to be dubbed eligible by the NCAA. First-year coach Megan Wise is leading this developing program as the club begins its second season at GW.
The Colonials have only three returning players from last year's squad which featured several seniors. The returning players. who compete in the top three spots. are Emily Elliott (Radnor, PA/Radnor), Alexandra Hahn (Darien, CT/Phillips Exeter Academy) and Jessica Marks (Denver, CO/Denver East).
The women's squash team begins the 2004 portion of the season with the Vassar Tournament Friday-Sunday, January 16-18.
