Women's Team Edged by Richmond

Jan. 31, 2002

RICHMOND, VA (Jan. 31) - Despite achieving eight individual season top times and one top score, the George Washington women's team could not grasp a win at the University of Richmond Wednesday afternoon. The final score was 190-109. Sophomore Ruth Dubyel (West Point, NY/James I. O'Neill) and freshman Kirsten Rasmuson (San Diego, CA/Mt. Carmel) each captured first place finishes in GW's meet.

For the second time this week Dubyel, who was named Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week on Tuesday, swam faster than her season best in two events, the 100-yd backstroke and 100-yd butterfly. She placed first in both with a time of :59.52 in the 100-yd backstroke and :57.61 in the 100-yd butterfly. She also finished second in the 200-yd backstroke with a time of 2:10.52. Rasmuson grasped first in the 100-yd breaststroke in 107.35. Her 400-yd free relay team, as well as Dubyel's 200-yd medley relay team, managed to finish a close second behind Richmond. Rasmuson, sophomore Kristen Fagley (Ft. Lauderdale, FL/Westminster Academy), junior Ashley Orchard (Tamarac, FL/Bradenton Christian), and senior Jocelyn Finch (Olympia, WA/Olympia) placed second in the 400-yd freestyle relay in 3:42.75. Dubyel and Orchard, along with junior Shannon Lynch (Medford, NJ/Lenape) and senior Nell Friar (Oak Ridge, TN/Oak Ridge) finished second in the 200-yd medley relay with GW's new season top time of 1:50.22.

The Colonials will not return to the pool until February 19, the first day of the Verizon Atlantic 10 Championships in Buffalo, NY.
